fietsroute van nationaal fietsmuseum VELORAMA

The route, which begins and ends at VELORAMA, crosses the border into Germany (so don't forget your passport, though you probably won't need to show it). It passes through magnificent woodland and riverside scenery.

Length: approx. 80 kilometres (50 miles)

Difficulty: for experienced cyclists

Be prepared for hilly sections at the beginning of the route.

Route

As you leave VELORAMA, turn up to the right onto the main road (with the marina on your left). Ride under the Waal bridge and continue along the Ubbergseweg until you reach the main Nijmegen-Kleve road. Cross this carefully! Turn left onto the parallel service road and continue uphill along the Rijksstraatweg.

At "De Refter" turn right onto Jan Dommer van Poldersveldtweg. This road, which later becomes Stollenbergweg, runs quite steeply uphill at this point. When you reach Oude Kleefsebaan, turn right. Turn right again at the sign for the Africa Museum ("Afrikamuseum"), and after about 700 metres (= 700 yards) take another right turn for Groesbeek. This is the famous Zevenheuvelenweg ("Seven Hills Road"), with a succession of steep climbs and descents. At the end of this hilly section, cross the road and turn left onto the cycle path. At Restaurant De Oude Molen turn right for "Groesbeek Centrum".

After 500 metres turn left onto Cranenburgsestraat. Continue along this until you reach a crossroads with an unsurfaced path leading straight on. Ride along the dyke and cross the stream (Groesbach) into Germany.

At the fork continue straight on (Drullerweg, which later becomes Postweg) and cross Galgenstege. At the left fork turn onto Schrammstrasse. In the village of Frasselt, turn right onto Gocherweg. On reaching Schwarzerweg, turn right onto it and go through the gate into the Reichswald forest.

Continue along the winding cycle path (which is of poor quality), and at the forester's house (Nergena Nord) turn left for Gennep. Turn right at the surfaced road (Kartenspielerweg). At the end of this road, turn left into the village of Grafwegen, where you will find Café Merlijn.

Just beyond Café Merlijn, cross back into Holland. About 200 metres along the surfaced road you will see a sign marked "Breedeweg". At "mushroom" No. 21686, turn left up the Sint Jansberg hill, and turn right at the fork into Klein Amerika. Turn left at the intersection with Knapheideweg. On reaching Mooksebaan, turn sharp left onto the cycle path.

At Café-Restaurant Het Zwaantje turn right onto Bisseltsebaan, which is only partly surfaced. At the end of this cycle path, turn right onto Sionsweg. At Restaurant De Sionshof go three-quarters of the way round the roundabout (Nijmeegsebaan).

After about 1 kilometre (just over half a mile), turn right at the traffic lights onto Sophiaweg. Turn right onto Eleonoraweg at the five-way crossroads. At the end of Eleonoraweg turn left onto Johannaweg. Turn right at Kwakkenbergweg and follow Oude Kleefsebaan all the way to the Wyler border post. Cross into Germany again and immediately turn left onto the cycle path along Hauptstrasse. After 250 metres go down to the right onto Crummestrasse.

At the mirror, turn left along Alte Heerstrasse, cross the main B9 road and head for Zyfflich (Wylerdeich). In Zyfflich, pass the church near Café Polm and turn right onto Kirchstrasse, which later becomes Mühlenend. Take the second road on the right (Kleyen), and at the end of this turn right onto Tiggelstrasse.

After 150 metres turn left onto Pferdekämpe and head for the hamlet of Mehr. On reaching Mehr, turn left in front of the church onto Querstrasse. At the end of this road turn left onto Tutweg, cross Mariaweg and then turn left onto Keekenerstrasse.

At the fork head straight on towards Duffelward, and at the end of this road cross the main K3 road. At the café at the end of the road, turn left for the ferry.

After 250 metres ride up onto the dyke, turn left past the ferry and continue along the dyke. Cross back into Holland and continue along the dyke (Rijndijk) until C.R. Waiboerweg, where you turn left.

Turn right onto Heerbaan, and after about 2 kilometres (a mile and a quarter) turn onto Weverstraat and follow it right through the village of Kekerdom. After Kekerdom ride up on to the dyke (Duffeltdijk) and keep following the dyke along the River Waal (the dyke changes name several times). Pass Café Oortjeshekken and continue along the dyke until the pumping-station (Nederlandsch-Duitsch Gemaal), which you can get past despite the reconstruction work.

Finally, turn right for Nijmegen and head past the houseboats for the Waal bridge. Cycle under the bridge and you will see VELORAMA on your left, opposite the marina.
