Hi there! Welcome to my Kids Only page! My name's Piet Pelle. I just love bikes, and I'm here to tell you all about them. Maybe you can use the things I tell you to write a project or give a talk at school. Or maybe you just love bikes as much as I do, and want to find out all you can about them. Do you know who else loved bikes? Freddy Mercury, the singer with the rock band Queen. He had a big hit with the song "I want to ride my bicycle". The words go like this:
Frankenstein of Superman, alles wat ik wil is fietsen en nog eens fietsen, ik wil op mijn fiets rijden' "I don't believe in Peter Pan, Frankenstein or Superman. All I want to do is bicycle, bicycle, bicycle, I want to ride my bicycle, bicycle, bicycle!" The song has been a hit all over the world - and so has the bike. Whether you're in Europe, America, Africa or Asia, you'll find that people ride bicycles pretty much everywhere. But the place where people ride them most is here in Holland. That makes sense, because Holland is nice and flat, so you don't have to pedal so hard. And there are safe cycle paths everywhere, which is something you don't have in most countries. What's more, they've got all kinds of different bikes. I bet you already know all about mountain bikes and racing bikes. But have you ever heard of a hobbyhorse? No, it isn't a kind of horse, and it isn't a kind of hobby either. And what about a penny-farthing, with its great big front wheel? These old bicycles look pretty silly to us now. It took a long time for inventors to come up with a design for the modern bicycle. Here at the Kids Only web site I'll tell you all about it. But maybe you can't be bothered to read it all? Then take a look at one of these instead: (just click on the word you want) |
